Come and make a radio!

Date: Saturday, 14 May 2016 10:00 - 15:30

Venue: Marconi Hall Street Works  |  City: Chelmsford, United Kingdom

A science and technology project for school years 6-9 (ages 10-14)

Part of Building the Wireless Age, a unique Marconi exhibition

At the original Marconi Wireless and Telegraphy works in Hall Street Chelmsford,
the world's first wireless factory which Marconi established in 1898.

Build your own wireless in the world's first ever wireless factory!

Make your own simple radio receiver and experience the same thrill that Marconi got when he first heard sounds in his earphones over 100 years ago. You will have the chance to wind an electrical coil, just as they did in this very building and, using modern components and construction techniques, learn to identify the radio components, how to solder and how to make it work. Take home your radio and enjoy exploring the airwaves!

Please note: children will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Experienced mentors will be assisting with this project led by Ed Bye, Technical Director, EMD Research, supported by Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society and Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society. Kits kindly provided at a special rate by Rapid Electronics.

There are three sessions per day: 10.00-11.30, 12.00-13.30 and 14.00-14.30.

Please book through Eventbrite:

Cost is £5 per radio including all components, earphones and battery. All proceeds will be used to cover exhibition project costs. This is a volunteer-led initiative.

Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society is proud to support Marconi Science WorX: Chelmsford Civic Society in collaboration with BBC Essex.
